Euro zone sentiment rises for fourth month in February

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Economic and business confidence in the 17 countries using the euro improved for the fourth straight month in February, the European Commission said on Wednesday, as factories saw their order books filling up.

Economic sentiment in the euro zone rose by a better-than-expected 1.6 points to 91.1, continuing a recovery started in November last year, the Commission said.

The euro hit a session high against the dollar after the data release, before slipping back slightly to trade around 1.3093 by 1035 GMT.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected a reading of 89.8.

The euro zone was managing to eke out a small recovery, but it was too soon to be optimistic about a broader trend, Capital Economics economist Ben May said.

"Clearly the Italian election and the political uncertainty and the market uncertainty that resulted from that is potentially another trigger for a new downward leg in business and consumer sentiment, and given that this survey predates that I think you certainly wouldn't want to assume you are going to see this continued upward trend in sentiment over the months ahead," he said.

The Commission also said business morale increased by 0.36 points to -0.73, reaching a level last seen in May 2012.

The European Central Bank's unprecedented decision last year to buy the bonds of governments who ask for help calmed the euro zone crisis dramatically, removing the risk for businesses of a break-up of the currency bloc.

The mood in factories brightened in February and managers told the Commission they saw rosier outlooks on expected production and on the size of overall order books. Morale in services also drove the rise in confidence, with service confidence up slightly as managers revised past evaluations.

Optimism was due to "sharp improvements in managers' assessment of the past business situation, and to a lesser extent, their views on past demand", the Commission said.

Consumer confidence increased marginally in the euro zone, by 0.3 points. Consumers were more positive about the future economy in general, but pessimistic about their own ability to save money over the next 12 months.

Feng Shui For Heng Seng Index And Chinese Markets Points To A Mixed Bag In 2013

In this special Chinese New Year's edition of China Money Podcast, we look at the fortunes of the Chinese stock market and various zodiac signs in the year of Black Water Snake, 2013.

year-of-the-snakeAsian brokerage firm CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets released its Feng Shui Index in 2013. The tongue-in-cheek index points to a strong first half for the Hang Seng Index during 2013, with the second half dominated by volatile movements in both directions. The whole year, however, will end up higher.

CLSA says the past five Snake years ? back to the Water Snake of 1953 ? are not encouraging. Snake years are marked by major transformation and change, including Pearl Harbour (1941), Twin Towers (2001), Tiananmen (1989), Fall of the Berlin Wall (1989), Great Depression (1929), recessions (1953, 2001), revolutions (1917, 1989) and major conflicts (1941, 1965).

In terms of sectors, CLSA expects the best performances from those traditionally associated with Metal (the likes of broking and financials) and also Water (such as gaming and logistics).

If you are Roosters, Cows and Dogs, fortune will be outstanding this year.?But Pigs, Tigers, Sheep and Snakes would need to work hard to improve their luck.

Happy Chinese New Year to all of our listeners and subscribers.

All-in-one Card Reader for iPad - USD$32.90

New Update: By popular demand, the finishing of the Card Readers for all new orders will be Matte instead of Glossy!?

?

Check out the full review at M.I.C Gadget!?

?

The original CF Card Reader for iPad was first introduced by M.I.C Gadget exclusively for DSLR camera users. It was featured by many top Photography and Tech sites such as RobGalbraith, PhotographyBlog, Engadget, Gizmodo, Wired, SlashGear, Photojojo etc.

?

We have now improved the card reader to support iOS 5.1 on The New iPad. It also comes with both SD and CF Card slots packed within its familiarly slim profile - two key functions for the price of one!

?

The new Card Reader has been tweaked to be able to overcome the Voltage Limit set by the iPad and hence supports even 600X CF Cards and Class 10 / UHS-I SD Cards. We have tested the Card Reader with SanDisk Extreme Pro CF and SD Cards with no issues - without any external power required.

?

However, we are aware that there are many other memory card brands in the market and around the world. Some of them might have power requirements beyond what the iPad can provide even without the Voltage Limit. The new Card Reader has an added power input port that can be optionally used for the extra juice these cards need to work.

Janelle Mon?e's Grammys Pompadour Remains Perfectly Perched Underneath Her Hat (PHOTO)

I'm still trying to perfect hat hair. With the nasty winter weather we've been trudging through in the Northeast (thanks Nemo!), you'd think I'd have it down pat by now. Yet, my naturally curly hair takes Gumby form as soon as I put on a slick topper. Womp! Womp!

But after seeing Janelle Mon?e's hat hair at the 2013 Grammys (and at Clive Davis' pre-Grammy gala), I haven't lost hope just yet.

The "Cold War" singer looked dapper in her signature black-and-white uniform. As she reminisced with E! host Giuliana Rancic about crowd surfing at the 2011 Grammys, we zoned in on Mon?e's perfectly-perched pompadour. A natural at sculpting the retro-inspired hairstyle herself, she admitted to Rancic that she relied on stylists for tonight's event.

Mon?e's pompadour has just the right amount of sheen so that it doesn't go missing underneath her black bolero. And can we discuss her matte foundation, well-groomed brows and bright red lipstick? She's owning her CoverGirl status!

What do you think about Janelle Mon?e's Grammys hairstyle? Should she toss the bolero hat? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section.

(AP) ? After years of fighting the government from hidden jungle bases in the southern Philippines, an Al-Qaida-linked militant group is facing a new adversary: fellow Muslim insurgents who can match their guerrilla battle tactics and are eager to regain their lost stature by fighting the widely condemned terrorist group.

The emerging enmity between the Abu Sayyaf militants and the Moro rebels could bolster a decade-long campaign by the Philippines and Western countries to isolate the al-Qaida offshoot Abu Sayyaf, which remains one of the most dangerous groups in Southeast Asia.

In their first known major clash, Abu Sayyaf gunmen battled rebels from the larger Moro National Liberation Front in fighting early this week, leaving at least 22 combatants dead in the mountainous jungles on southern Jolo Island. A Moro rebel was beheaded ? Abu Sayyaf's signature act.

Bonded by blood ties and war, the two armed groups had co-existed for years on Jolo in a predominantly Muslim region, where abject poverty, guns and weak law enforcement have combined in an explosive mix to fuel their rebellions and pockets of lawlessness.

The trouble began after the Moro rebels ? seeking to regain their former dominance in the region ? tried to arrange the release of several hostages held by the Abu Sayyaf, including a prominent Jordanian TV journalist and two European tourists. When the Abu Sayyaf commanders refused to free the hostages, Moro rebels launched an attack.

The Moro rebels are now trying to rescue the captives and end the Abu Sayyaf's reign, Moro commander Khabier Malik told The Associated Press.

"We breath the same air, speak the same language and live and fight in the same jungle," he said by telephone. "We're a bigger force and we cannot allow this small group to reign with this brutality."

For years, a shadowy alliance is believed to have existed between the groups. While the Moro rebels signed a limited peace deal with the government years ago, some Moro commanders are suspected of giving sanctuary to Abu Sayyaf men and carrying out kidnappings for ransom with them.

"Collusion between the Abu Sayyaf Group and MNLF members ? many of whom are relatives ? on Jolo is a major reason why large swaths of the island have been essentially ungovernable for years," said Bryony Lau of the Brussels-based International Crisis Group think tank. The government "should consider whether the recent clash has shifted relations between them in a way that could make it easier to isolate senior figures of the Abu Sayyaf Group."

But the rift offers no easy answers for the Philippines. Weaning the Moro rebels from hardened militants would mean a true government alliance with the rebels, some of whom are suspected of involvement in attacks on civilians and government forces.

Walking a tightrope amid the clashes, President Benigno Aquino III said the Moro offensive was not sanctioned by his government. But government officials also are not trying to stop the fighting, presumably hoping each group weakens the other. Police and soldiers have simply set up checkpoints to seal off the area around the fighting, trying to keep it from spilling into other rural areas.

Sulu provincial Governor Abdusakur Tan said he would allow the Moro attacks to continue, at least for now.

"They're cleaning their ranks. These kidnappers are either their former members or one of their own," Tan said.

The Moro National Liberation Front spearheaded an underground movement in the early 1970s for a separatist Islamic state. But it dropped its secessionist goal when it accepted limited autonomy for minority Muslims in the predominantly Roman Catholic nation's south, prompting key guerrillas to break away, including a Libyan-educated radical, who established the Abu Sayyaf.

Another major guerrilla bloc broke off from the original Moro group and formed the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, which has emerged as the country's largest Muslim rebel group.

The Moro rebels were not required to disarm under the landmark 1996 peace deal, allowing fighters to settle to their Jolo communities with their weapons. The accord also lacked a provision to formally enlist the rebels in hunting down criminals and terrorists straying into their strongholds, an oversight that may have helped foster collusion years later between the Moro rebels and the Abu Sayyaf.

Philippine officials forged such a pact in peace talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front with impressive results. Hunted by U.S.-backed Filipino troops in 2005, Abu Sayyaf chieftain Khadaffy Janjalani and other militants sought refuge in a stronghold Moro Islamic Liberation Front, which turned them away. Janjalani, then among the most-wanted terrorist suspects in Southeast Asia, was killed by troops the following year on Jolo.

The Abu Sayyaf ? "Bearer of the Sword" in Arabic ? was founded with funds and training believed to come from a collection of Asian and Middle Eastern radical groups, including al-Qaida. It came to U.S. attention in 2001 when it kidnapped three Americans, one of whom was beheaded, along with dozens of Filipinos and openly swore allegiance to Osama bin Laden's movement.

The kidnappings prompted Washington to deploy hundreds of troops in the south in 2002 to train Philippine forces and share intelligence, helping the military capture or kill most of the Abu Sayyaf's top commanders. Now without a central leader, the group has less than 400 armed fighters, who the military says are constantly on the run from U.S.-backed local offensives.

Philippine security officials attribute the Abu Sayyaf's resilience to the difficulty of hunting down small pockets of fighters by soldiers unfamiliar with the vast mountainous jungles of Jolo and outlying islands.

Etsy Is Trying to Pop Silicon Valley's Meritocracy Bubble

LONDON, Feb 8 (Reuters) - Formula One must bring rising costs under control to help struggling teams race on in tough economic circumstances, even if talk of impending crisis is wide of the mark, principals agree. The folding of Spanish-based HRT since the end of last season owed as much to the economic troubles of the team's debt-stricken homeland as to its lack of success on the track but it still flashed up warning signs. ...

A substance which has been covering birds on the south coast is an oil additive, a university has said.

The substance - found on seabirds off the south coast of Cornwall, Devon and Dorset, and up to West Sussex - has caused burning to birds.

Plymouth University said it was a form of polyisobutene, which was used as a lubricating additive in oils to improve performance.

It added it was informing the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the RSPCA.

Guide to UK seabirds

  • Guillemots (pictured) are the most common seabird found around the British Isles

Chemical analyst Professor Steve Rowland, of the university's Centre for Chemical Sciences, said all the data it had gathered supported the conclusion.

He said: "It's very sticky and semi-solid, hence its acting on birds' feathers like a glue.

He added that it was also "difficult to biodegrade".

"It's quite big as a molecule, and quite difficult for bacteria and other weathering processes.

"Residues will probably stay around in the environment for some time, though hopefully not in this large mass that pollutes the birds."

He said he was aware of only one other incident of the "relatively common" substance being spilled in 1994.

The pollutant has affected hundreds of seabirds washed up since last week.

Birds have been found with the substance congealed on their feathers, reducing their waterproof coating and ability to stay warm and afloat at sea.

Dorset Wildlife Trust said the oil was "potentially harmful" to humans, although no injuries have yet been reported.

More than 300 birds, mostly guillemots but also some razorbills, have been treated at the RSPCA West Hatch centre near Taunton, Somerset.

Landsat 8 Satellite Set to Rescue Global-Change Observations

The launch next week comes at a time when the future of the world's longest-running set of Earth-observations data is at stake

When Landsat 5 fell silent on 6?January, scientists across the globe mourned its passing but gave thanks for its fortitude. The satellite had lasted a record-breaking 28 years, snapping images of the changing planet from melting glaciers to burning rainforests, while its successors faltered. Landsat 6 failed during launch and Landsat?7, at 13 years old, is partially blind and has limited fuel. With the passing of Landsat?5, the future of the world?s longest-running?? and perhaps most influential?? set of data on global change rests with Landsat?8, which is scheduled to launch next week from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

?Landsat 8 is the most important NASA Earth-observing mission in over a decade,? says Greg Asner, an ecologist at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Stanford, California, who uses Landsat data to track tropical-forest trends. After making do for years with ageing and impaired orbiters, ?we are getting our eyes back in the sky?, says Asner. ?Those eyes are going to be extremely good.?

From the first launch in 1972, Landsat was designed to provide a global record of land-cover and land-use change. The earliest satellites captured images at several visible-light and near-infrared frequencies, all with a resolution of 80 meters. Landsats?4 and 5 reached 30-meter resolution and could see farther into the infrared, to aid studies of soil moisture and vegetation. Landsat 7 added a multi-spectral sensor that can achieve 15-meter resolution. Through careful calibration, the program has built up a continuous 40-year record of observations at the original frequencies, spanning a period of huge change for the planet.

The latest mission, commissioned in 2002, had a tortuous birth. NASA originally intended to buy data from a privately owned satellite, then formulated a plan to mount Landsat sensors on a separate set of polar-orbiting satellites. Only in 2005 did the administration of then-president George W. Bush call for an independent craft, formally known as the Landsat Data Continuity Mission.

The size of a large jeep, the US$855-million spacecraft will circle Earth at an altitude of about 700?kilometers, carrying sensors of even higher precision than its predecessors. Instead of scanning the terrain below it with a mirror and sending the signal to a few sensors, it will capture instantaneous views of a 185-kilometer swathe of Earth, using some 7,000?sensors for each bandwidth. The result is more data from each location and better image quality. ?The data are much more sensitive to change across the landscape and over time,? says Jim Irons, project scientist for the mission at NASA?s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. ?Maybe we will be able to better differentiate corn from sorghum, for example, or maple trees from oak trees.?

The spacecraft will also be the first in the Landsat series to collect data in an ?ultra-blue? band, particularly useful for studying oceans and atmospheric aerosols. Another new data stream will be a shortwave infrared band that is sensitive to cirrus clouds, which are powerful players in Earth?s climate.

Landsat has endured major changes in ideology and organization during its lifetime, notably in the 1980s and 1990s, when Congress gave control of the satellites and all data to a private company. Images sold for several thousand dollars each, limiting analysis to an elite corps of scientists. The government regained control in 2001, however, and from 2008 the US Geological Survey, which oversees the data, opened up the archive as a free global resource. Access exploded. Whereas the agency once sold around 15,000 images a year, annual downloads now average about 3 million.

?It provided for data democracy,? says Mike Wulder, a research scientist at the Canadian Forest Service in Victoria and a member of the Landsat science advisory team. ?Landsat really is a global resource.?

Ravens win emotional Super Bowl against 49ers

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - The Baltimore Ravens reclaimed the greatest prize in North American sports after a dramatic, nail-biting 34-31 Super Bowl victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

Inspired by their power-packed quarterback Joe Flacco, the Ravens survived a ferocious comeback from the 49ers and a bizarre power outage that stopped the game for more than half an hour to win their second Super Bowl.

John Harbaugh, the head coach of the Ravens, won the most anticipated sibling rivalry in American team sports against his younger brother Jim, who holds the equivalent job with the 49ers.

And Ray Lewis, the combative 37-year-old Ravens linebacker destined for the Hall of Fame, ended his 17 season career with a second Super Bowl title, 12 years after he won his first.

"What better way to go out?" said Lewis. "We did it! We did it!"

The game, at the Superdome in New Orleans, was preceded by one of the most poignant moments ever witnessed in the 47 editions of the Super Bowl when a choir from Sandy Hook Elementary School joined Jennifer Hudson in a stirring rendition of "America the Beautiful".

The 70,000 spectators rose to their feet, many with tears in their eyes, as the children sang, nearly two months after the deadly shooting rampage at their Connecticut school.

"Our wish is to demonstrate to America and the world that, "We are Sandy Hook and we choose love," the school said in a statement.

The action on the field was as wild as the parties that have taken place in Bourbon St in the days leading up to the game as the Ravens opened up a commanding lead.

With Flacco, who was named Most Valuable Player, calling the shots and wide receiver Jacoby Jones scoring two of the most spectacular touchdowns seen in a Super Bowl, the Ravens looked to be cruising to victory when they led 28-6 early in the third quarter.

Flacco made a great start, orchestrating a six-play, 51-yard drive on his team's first possession that culminated with a 13-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Anquan Boldin.

In the second quarter, he threw a one-yard scoring pass to tight end Dennis Pitta, then a spectacular 56-yard scoring strike to Jones.

The Ravens led 21-6 when Beyonce came out to perform a stunning halftime show then opened the second half with a Super Bowl-record 108-yard kickoff return for a touchdown from Jones that will be shown on highlight reels for generations to come.

BLACK OUT

But just when it seemed the result was a foregone conclusion, a section of the lights at the Superdome, hosting the Super Bowl for the first time since Hurricane Katrina devastated the city in 2005, blacked out.

Play was stopped for 35 minutes while red-faced officials and technicians restored power. When it came back on, the game instantly took on a completely different complexion.

With Colin Kaepernick finally finding his targets and making inroads with the football in hand, San Francisco piled on 17 unanswered points.

When Kaepernick rushed for a touchdown himself with just 10 minutes to go in the final quarter, the margin was down to just two points and momentum was on their side.

But Justin Tucker kicked a 38-yard field goal to give his team a five-point lead and the 49ers failed to score the touchdown they needed to win, getting only a two-point safety, as the Ravens defended their line for dear life.

"Five yards short, all the work we did in the offseason, the whole entire season, everything came down to five yards and we weren't able to get it done," said dejected 49ers tackle Joe Staley.

Both team played down the impact of the power outage, saying it was the same for both teams, while the Harbaugh brothers embraced each other as confetti rained down from the roof after one of the most emotional nights in American sport.

"I just love him obviously. I think anybody out there who has a brother can understand what that is all about," John said.

"The meeting with Jim in the middle was probably the most difficult thing I have ever been associated with in my life. I am proud of him."

Branden R. Williams, Business Security Specialist ? January 2013 ...

February 4th, 2013 by Branden Williams Stay Classy, San Diego!

Stay Classy, San Diego!

What was popular in January, a special SuperBowl Edition! The big game is over, and many of us are pouting until August because of the lack of NFL action. Or at least we?re watching reruns on the NFL network on Sundays until we can flip over to NASCAR and root for crazy (but survivable) crashes. January was a busy month for security professionals! We saw new, game changing products released and we?re all gearing up for RSA Conference at the end of this month.

Here are the five most popular posts from the last month:

  1. How Starbucks is Revolutionizing Mobile (Micro) Payments. You know how you see those crazy fools that pass their phone in front of some magical sensor at Starbucks and never seem to pull out their wallet, yet walk away with coffee? That is really part of a huge master plan to reduce the impact that payments has on the organization. Check out the scenarios discussed!
  2. The Only Customer Service Script You Will Ever Need. Apparently customer service was pretty bad last month. Or at least people were fed up with trying to return ties and broken toys from the holidays. Check out this diversion from security that will make you think about how you interact with your customers.
  3. The Definition of Cardholder Data. Another oldie but goodie for the fourth month in a row. It?s still on people?s minds, probably because they are looking for ways to drop systems out of scope of PCI DSS, or because they are looking at the new eCommerce guidance from the Council. Hopefully this is a good benchmark for you.
  4. MasterCard Releases Mobile POS Best Practices. I was quickly informed that this has been out for a while, but I?m not sure if plebeians like me could 1) access them and 2) link to them. But after review, I must say it is an incredibly valuable document for anyone wanting to do Mobile POS.
  5. How to Make a Mobile Payment App Comply with PCI DSS. Mobile isn?t going anywhere, and more people are struggling with the business-stifling requirements in place to use some of these applications. No worries, read this post to see how you can do this safely and still pass a PCI DSS assessment!

Thanks for stopping by!

Experimental therapy crosses blood-brain barrier to treat neurological disease

Feb. 4, 2013 ? Researchers have overcome a major challenge to treating brain diseases by engineering an experimental molecular therapy that crosses the blood-brain barrier to reverse neurological lysosomal storage disease in mice.

Posted online in PNAS Early Edition on Feb. 4, the study was led by scientists at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

"This study provides a non-invasive procedure that targets the blood-brain barrier and delivers large-molecule therapeutic agents to treat neurological lysosomal storage disorders," said Dao Pan, PhD, principal investigator on the study and researcher in the Cancer and Blood Diseases Institute at Cincinnati Children's. "Our findings will allow the development of drugs that can be tested for other brain diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's."

The scientists assembled the large molecular agents by merging part of a fatty protein called apolipoprotein E (apoE) with a therapeutic lysosomal enzyme called a-L-idurondase (IDUA). Naming the agents IDUAe1 and IDUAe2, researchers used them initially to treat laboratory cultured human cells of the disease mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS I). They also tested the agents on mouse models of MPS I.

MPS I is one of the most common lysosomal storage diseases to affect the central nervous system, which in severe form can become Hurler syndrome. In humans, patients can suffer from hydrocephalus, learning delays and other cognitive deficits. If not treated, many patients die by age 10.

Lysosomes are part of a cell's internal machinery, serving as a waste disposal system that helps rid cells of debris to retain normal function. In lysosomal storage diseases like MPS I, enzymes needed to dissolve debris are missing, allowing debris to build up in cells until they malfunction.

In MPS I, cells lack the IDUA enzyme, allowing abnormal accumulation of a group of large molecules called glycosaminoglycans in the brain and other organs. Researchers in the current study used the new therapeutic procedure to deliver IDUA to brain cells. But first they had to successfully engineer the therapy to carry IDUA through the blood-brain barrier to diseased brain cells.

The blood-brain barrier is a physiological blockade that alters the permeability of tiny blood vessels called capillaries in the brain. Its purpose is to protect the brain by preventing certain drugs, pathogens and other foreign substances from entering brain tissues. The barrier has also been a persistent roadblock to treating brain disease with drugs.

The scientists experimented with a set of derivative components of the fatty protein apoE, which binds to fat receptors on endothelial cells that form the inside surface of capillaries in the blood-brain barrier. They discovered that tagging some of the apoE components to the IDUA enzyme allowed the modified protein to attach to endothelial cells and cross through the cells to reach brain tissues.

Researchers injected experimental IDUAe1 into the tail veins of MPS I mouse models. The tests showed that -- unlike currently available un-modified enzyme treatments -- the modified enzyme penetrated the blood-brain barrier and entered brain neurons and astrocytes in a dose-dependent manner.

The researchers also reported that brain cells in the treated mice exhibited normalized levels of the glycosaminoglycans and the lysosomal enzyme beta-hexosaminidase. With continued treatment through hematopoietic stem cell gene therapy, normalized levels persisted until the end of a five-month observation period, researchers said.

The scientists are continuing their preclinical studies to further verify the use of the experimental IDUA-based agents for treating MPS I, cautioning that results in laboratory mice may face additional challenges when translating to clinical application in humans. Researchers are also testing whether the large-molecule therapeutic procedure used in the current study can be leveraged to develop other neurotherapeutic agents that cross the blood-brain barrier.

Also collaborating on the study was Roscoe O. Brady, MD, a researcher and scientist emeritus at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Funding support for the study came from National Institutes of Health grants NS064330, DK074932 and U54 HL06-008.

Late?goal gives Arsenal?win over Stoke ?|? Roundup

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:34 p.m. ET Feb. 2, 2013

LONDON (AP) -Substitute Lukas Podolski scored with a deflected free kick to give Arsenal a much-needed 1-0 victory against Stoke in the English Premier League on Saturday.

After securing just five points in five league matches, sixth-placed Arsenal was in danger of losing ground in its quest for a European spot.

Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic had an impressive first half in which he superbly denied Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain either side of stopping Laurent Koscielny's header.

Podolski ended Stoke's hopes 12 minutes from time with a low free kick that deflected in off Geoff Cameron.

The Gunners made five changes for the match, with deadline-day signing Nacho Monreal handed his debut. The Spain international replaced injured Kieran Gibbs at left back.

Robert Huth blocked early threatening balls from Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere, before Oxlade-Chamberlain, making his first league start since January 13, struck wide.

It took 15 minutes for Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny to be tested by Stoke. Jonathan Walters' strike from distance was comfortably dealt with by the Poland international, who then watched Peter Crouch's attempt deflect off Koscielny and out for a corner.

There were rare moments of relief for a Stoke side on the backfoot, with Olivier Giroud heading Abou Diaby's cross into the ground when Arsenal returned to the attack.

Andy Wilkinson then blocked a right-footed strike from Walcott and, after Ryan Shawcross sent over a wayward volley, City goalkeeper Begovic came to the fore.

First, the Bosnia international denied Oxlade-Chamberlain from close range after Wilshere's corner fell straight into his path.

Begovic prevented Arsenal once again in the 34th, denying Koscielny's header with another block.

Four minutes from the break, Wilshere played an exquisite through ball to Oxlade-Chamberlain, whose curled effort was superbly palmed wide by Begovic.

After the break, Giroud fired wide under pressure but Arsenal's attacks were becoming less frequent.

Wenger brought on Santi Cazorla and Podolski in a bid to inject new life into his side's attack, with Diaby and Oxlade-Chamberlain replaced.

The introduction of the Spaniard almost had an immediate impact as Cazorla sent in a floated cross to Giroud, but the Frenchman was unable to direct his header on target.

Glenn Whelan picked up a booking as City looked to hold off the hosts, who finally took the lead in the 78th minute.

Wilkinson received a yellow card for bringing down Walcott on the edge of the box, allowing substitute Podolski to send a low free kick that deflected in off Cameron's heel.

It had looked like the goal would be disallowed for an apparent offside against Walcott, but, after consulting with his assistant, referee Chris Foy awarded the goal.

Cazorla came close to making it 2-0 shortly afterwards, only for Begovic to get the slightest touch to send it behind.

Michael Owen, Kenwyne Jones and Cameron Jerome all came on for the final stages as Stoke manager Tony Pulis looked for an equalizer, which never came in a heated end to the game.

Shawcross was booked for a late challenge on Koscielny and Owen appeared to aim a punch at Mikel Arteta after a late challenge by the Spaniard.

MU taps Post writer to speak at graduation - The Miami Student

Miami University announced Monday that the May 2013 commencement speaker will be journalist, author and Miami alumnus Wil Haygood. Haygood (Miami ?76) has worked as a journalist for the Washington Post since 2002, according to Carole Johnson, assistant director of university news and communication.

The 2013 Commencement Speaker Advisory Committee identified Haygood along with a handful of other potential speakers to be presented to University President David Hodge, according to Ted Pickerill, executive assistant to the president. Hodge then made a final decision and extended Haygood a personal invitation.

The selection committee looks for commencement speakers who are successful, well-respected, good speakers and inspiring to students, according to Pickerill. As is customary, the Miami alumnus will receive an honorary degree at the commencement ceremony in May.

Pickerill said Haygood?s recent success as well as his connection to the university made him a strong candidate.

?It?s really special when [the commencement speaker] can be an alumnus who?s successful, well-known, well-respected and inspiring,? Pickerill said. ?What?s more inspiring to a Miami graduating student than to have a speaker who once sat there themselves??

The advisory committee is comprised of 20 people, including faculty, staff and students: an undergraduate student from each division, one from a branch campus and a graduate student. Each member submits a list of names to be considered for the position, and then the committee as a whole votes to narrow the list to a few key suggestions.

Pickerill said the inclusion of student opinion is an important component to the selection process.

?Because commencement is an event for the graduates,? Pickerill said. ?To celebrate their completion of Miami University.?

Senior Taylor Lewis was on the committee that selected Haygood. He will graduate in May and hear Haygood speak.

?I?m excited,? Lewis said. ?We?re all at this place in our lives where we?re going off into the real world. Having someone there to inspire [the graduates] and encourage them to go forward with their Miami degree and do something great, so that 20 years down they road maybe they can come back and say ?this is what Miami gave to me.??

Lewis said Haygood?s achievements and connection with Miami were impressive attributes. He also cited Haygood?s inspirational personal story as a reason for his selection.

?He was raised in Columbus and came to Miami and obviously he is African American,? Lewis said. ?Coming to Miami is not the most [welcoming] in terms of diversity.?

Lewis, an education major, said Haygood?s success and career is something that will resonate with all graduates, regardless of their program.

?I think journalism and media affects all of our lives, doesn?t matter if your in education, engineering, if you?re going to be a doctor or a businessman,? he said. ?All of us read the news, all of us like reading good books. Just the fact that he?s a Miami alum and he knows what it takes, he?s walked the same brick paths as we have. I think that?s just one more thing that?s like ?oh wow, I can totally be successful in this world.??

Haygood is a Pulitzer Prize finalist and has earned awards and distinctions for feature writing and national and foreign reporting, including a National Headliner Award, Sunday Magazine Editors Award and National Association of Black Journalists award, according to Johnson.

For the Washington Post, Haygood covered Hurricane Katrina and reported on Barack Obama?s 2008 campaign. Pickerill also pointed to Haygood?s recent newsworthy endeavors as another reason for his selection. Haygood?s 2008 front-page story about White House butler Eugene Allen is the inspiration for the film The Butler, directed by Lee Daniels due to be released next fall. The film stars Oprah Winfrey, Forest Whitaker, Jane Fonda, Cuba Gooding Jr. Vanessa Redgrave and Robin Williams. Haygood is an associate producer of the movie.

Haygood is also currently writing a book about Thurgood Marshall, former Supreme Court Justice and Brown v. Board of Education lawyer.
