This photo provided provided WHIO TV shows a plane after it crashed Saturday, June 22, 2013, at the Vectren Air Show near Dayton, Ohio. There was no immediate word on the fate of the pilot, wing walker or anyone else aboard the plane. No one on the ground was hurt. (AP Photo/WHIO-TV)

CINCINNATI (AP) ? A budget analyst with a daredevil streak, Jane Wicker knew she was taking a risk when she signed up to entertain thousands of spectators at the Vectren Air Show near Dayton.

She said in a TV interview she felt confident of her ability and said on her website that lots of practice makes her signature stunt a "managed risk." She planned to hang underneath the plane's wing by her feet and sit on the bottom of the airplane while it was upside-down.

It wasn't clear Saturday what went so wrong. The biplane glided through the sky, rolled over, then crashed and exploded into flames, killing the wing walker and the pilot, authorities said. No one else was hurt.

A video posted on WHIO-TV shows the small plane turn upside-down as the performer sits on top of the wing. The plane then tilts and crashes to the ground, erupting into flames as spectators screamed.

Ian Hoyt, an aviation photographer and licensed pilot from Findlay, was at the show with his girlfriend. He told The Associated Press he was taking photos as the plane passed by and had just raised his camera to take another shot.

"Then I realized they were too low and too slow. And before I knew it, they hit the ground," he said.

He couldn't tell exactly what happened, but it appeared that the plane stalled and didn't have enough air speed, he said. He credited the pilot for steering clear of spectators and potentially saving lives.

"Had he drifted more, I don't know what would have happened," Hoyt said. He said he had been excited to see the show because he'd never seen the scheduled performer ? wing walker Jane Wicker ? in action.

The show was canceled for the rest of the day, but organizers said events would resume Sunday and follow the previous schedule and normal operations. The National Transportation Safety Board said it is investigating the crash.

On the video, the announcer narrates as the plane glides through the sky and rolls over while the stuntwoman perches on a wing.

"Now she's still on that far side. Keep an eye on Jane. Keep an eye on Charlie. Watch this! Jane Wicker, sitting on top of the world," the announcer said, right before the plane makes a quick turn and nosedive.

Federal records show the 450 HP Stearmans was registered to Wicker, who lived in Loudon, Va. A man who answered the phone at a number listed for Wicker on her website said he had no comment and hung up.

One of the pilots listed on Wicker's website was named Charlie Schwenker. A post on Jane Wicker Airshows' Facebook page announced the deaths of Wicker and Schwenker, and asked for prayers for their families.

A message left at a phone listing for Charles Schwenker in Oakton, Va., wasn't immediately returned.

Dayton International Airport spokeswoman Linda Hughes and Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Anne Ralston confirmed that a pilot and stunt walker had died but declined to give their names. The air show also declined to release their identities.

Another spectator, Shawn Warwick of New Knoxville, told the Dayton Daily News that he was watching the flight through binoculars.

"I noticed it was upside-down really close to the ground. She was sitting on the bottom of the plane," he said. "I saw it just go right into the ground and explode."

Thanh Tran of Fairfield said he could see a look of concern on the wing walker's face just before the plane went down.

"She looked very scared," he said. "Then the airplane crashed on the ground. After that, it was terrible, man ... very terrible."

Wicker's website says she responded to a classified ad from the Flying Circus Airshow in Bealeton, Va., in 1990, for a wing-walking position, thinking it would be fun. She was a contract employee who worked as a Federal Aviation Administration budget analyst, the FAA said.

She talked to WDTN-TV in an interview this week about her signature stunt.

"I'm never nervous or scared because I know if I do everything as I usually do, everything's going to be just fine," she told the station.

Wicker wrote on her website that she had never had any close calls.

"What you see us do out there is after an enormous amount of practice and fine tuning, not to mention the airplane goes through microscopic care. It is a managed risk and that is what keeps us alive," she wrote.

In 2011, wing walker Todd Green fell 200 feet to his death at an air show in Michigan while performing a stunt in which he grabbed the skid of a helicopter.

In 2007, veteran stunt pilot Jim LeRoy was killed at the Dayton show when his biplane slammed into the runway while performing loop-to-loops and caught fire.

Organizers were presenting a trimmed-down show and expected smaller crowds at Dayton after the Air Force Thunderbirds and other military participants pulled out this year because of federal budget cuts.

The air show, one of the country's oldest, usually draws around 70,000 people and has a $3.2 million impact on the local economy. Without military aircraft and support, the show expected attendance to be off 30 percent or more.

Why Fans Still Defend Paula Deen After Food Network Firing

The Food Network now contains 15% less butter. On Friday night, the cable channel announced that Paula Deen, the Southern chef famous for her cholesterol-laden recipes, would be packing up her cookware at the end of the month. The firing was prompted by accusations of racism against Deen, who admitted to using the N-word during a recent court hearing. Yet many of Deen's fans are remaining loyal, and a supportive Facebook campaign has already collected a quarter of a million "likes."

Apple issues OS X 10.8.4 update

Less than a week out from WWDC, Apple's issuing the latest update to Mountain Lion. The company's recommending the newest version of the operating system for security / stability reasons. For the most part, however, there doesn't seem to be anything too big in here. OS X 10.8.4 looks to primarily address some bugs, including WiFi network compatibility, Calendar / Exchange usage, as well as fixes to FaceTime calling, Boot Camp and Safari. Also on the list are improvements to mobile account compatibility, iMessage display and Calendar Birthdays. Check the source link below for the full list of fixes.

Japan PM targets income gains in growth strategy

Republicans are fuming over New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's decision to hold an early special election to fill the seat of the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg, with several Washington-based operatives suggesting he's looking out for his own interests over helping the GOP regain a Senate majority. The decision to hold a separate special election in October 2013?just two weeks before his own election?would give any interested Republican candidates little time to announce, organize a campaign, and raise the necessary money to take on a top-tier Democrat, likely Newark Mayor Cory Booker.

Study compares data from hundreds of people in childhood and old age

A new study shows compelling evidence that associations between cognitive ability and cortical grey matter in old age can largely be accounted for by cognitive ability in childhood. The joint study by the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital, The Neuro, McGill University and the University of Edinburgh, UK was published today, June 4 in Molecular Psychiatry.

It has long been thought that preserving brain cortical thickness was a determining factor in superior cognitive ability in old age; however the rare availability of childhood cognitive scores reveals other possible explanations. The article's lead authors, Dr. Sherif Karama at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital, and Dr. Ian Deary of the University of Edinburgh, found in fact that childhood cognitive ability accounted for more than two-thirds of the association between cognitive ability and cortical thickness in old age.

The researchers compared the results of standardized intelligence tests of 588 people taken when the subjects were 11 years old and when they were 70, as well as MRI brain scans taken when participants turned 73. Those with dementia were excluded from the analysis.

"Without early-life measures of cognitive ability, it would have been tempting to conclude that preservation of cortical thickness in old age is a foundation for successful cognitive aging when, instead, it is a lifelong association," says Dr. Karama, who has done extensive research into factors that influence cognitive development. "Reasons behind this lifelong association are likely complex. There might be a reciprocal, dynamic association between cortical thickness and cognitive ability. For example, greater cortical thickness in childhood could lead to greater cognitive ability, which in turn might lead to a greater likelihood to engage in stimulating activities that could result in better cortical maintenance. As a whole, these results can be viewed as compatible with the notion that the factors that account for associations between cognitive ability and cortical thickness in old age have been acting throughout one's life and are not exclusive to old age."

Why You Need To Book A Cab To Travel - ArticleSnatch.com

The traffic jams and crowded roads have made driving in the cities a notorious task. Let's face it, no one likes to waste one's time and energy on the steers. Even though the metros and the cabs have made life much simpler for the majority of the public, there is little respite because of the people-jam in public transport. Here is why you need to book a cab to travel around the city:

- Going back to the public transport, it is a perturbing and perplexing site inside the DTC buses too, where it is a struggle to stand on both your feet. The maddening rush inside the bus makes it hard to even breathe (and when you do, it's mostly bad body odour of your fellow passengers). By the time you reach your workplace, you realize the feeling of rejuvenation after the cold shower in the morning got lost in the mist of seat and pollution. This is probably the biggest motivation to booking cabs. Cabs can step in to bring in a comfortable travel experience.

- Contrary to the popular perception, cabs do not dig too deep into pockets. It depends on the kind of research that goes in to find the cab providers. Scrambling through thick and heavy directories to find the contact numbers of cab providers is never going to be a great idea. So just turn on your computer, connect it to the internet, and let Google, Yahoo, etc. find cab providers for you. You can customize your search based on your budget, the kind of car that you prefer to travel in, the specific offers and discounts you would want to avail and most important of all, you can find the nearest cab provider from your home. With a plethora of options available on the Internet, you can compare the offers by different cab providers and make an informed decision.

- Scheduling is not a problem when you are booking online. You do not have to make calls on numbers which apparently are always busy. In the case you book a cab over your phone, there is a great deal of trouble if you want to cancel the booking or change the timings. On the other hand, cab booked online can always be cancelled or postponed with just a few clicks. Even during the time of booking, you have a number of available time slots and you can scroll through them with leisure.

There is only one thing that booking a cab cannot solve when it comes to travel - it cannot stop the traffic from jamming the roads. Apart from that, book a cab service is absolutely hassle free. Firstly, you don't have to worry about reaching somewhere on time. Cab services are efficient enough to pick you up from the place where you want them to and drop you to the place where you don't want to be late to. Efficiency is the core focus of these services because the "book a cab" service providers know the kind of competition that they have to face.

Photos From the Anti-Government Protests in Turkey

Anti-government protesters clash with riot police in Istanbul on June 3, 2013. Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip?Erdo?an accused anti-government protesters on Monday of walking "arm-in-arm with terrorism," remarks that could further inflame public anger after three days of some of the most violent riots in decades.

Turkish deputy PM seeks to calm anti-government protests

By Alexandra Hudson and Humeyra Pamuk

ISTANBUL/ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey's deputy prime minister sought to mollify tens of thousands of anti-government demonstrators on Tuesday by apologizing for a police crackdown on a peaceful protest that triggered five days of rioting across the country.

The comments by Bulent Arinc, who took charge of government after Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan left on a visit to North Africa on Monday, contrasted with Erdogan's defiant dismissal of the protesters as "looters".

"The excessive violence that was used in the first instance against those who were behaving with respect for the environment is wrong and unfair. I apologize to those citizens," Arinc told a news conference in the capital Ankara.

"But I don't think we owe an apology to those who have caused damage in the streets and tried to prevent people's freedom," he said.

Arinc said he would meet some of the organizers of the original Istanbul protest, which has spiraled into an unprecedented show of anger at the ruling party.

It appeared to be too little too late.

Shops were shuttered on a main avenue leading to Istanbul's Taksim Square, the focus of the protests, as thousands of demonstrators chanting anti-government slogans marched by. Barricades of rubble blocked other streets leading to the square and the acrid smell of tear gas hung in the air.

A 22-year-old member of the main opposition youth wing was killed after being hit in the head at a rally in the southern town of Antakya near the Syrian border late on Monday, the second death after a taxi hit a demonstrator in Istanbul on Sunday. Officials initially said the Antakya victim had been shot.

The ferocity of the crackdown on the initial protests on Friday, which began over government plans to build over a Gezi Park in Taksim Square, shocked even Erdogan loyalists and drew international condemnation. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said he was concerned by reports of excessive police force.

The main public sector union federation, the leftist KESK which represents 240,000 members, launched a two-day strike, originally called over workers' rights, to protest at the police crackdown on what had begun as peaceful protests.

"These operations have drowned the country in gas bombs. The prime minister has become so thoughtless as to describe the millions who exercise their democratic rights ... as a 'handful of marginal looters'," KESK said in a statement.

Erdogan has dismissed the protests as the work of secular enemies never reconciled to the election success of his AK Party, which has roots in Islamist parties banned in the past but which also embraces center-right and nationalist elements. The party has won three straight elections and overseen an economic boom, increasing Turkey's influence in the region.
