LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Authorities say a sailor who died in a racing boat wreck off Southern California was a 36-year-old San Diego man.
Medical examiners say Saturday that Craig Thomas Williams was one of six people aboard a 32-foot sailboat that lost its steering capability and drifted into the rocky shore of San Clemente Island.
The crew of Uncontrollable Urge was forced to abandon ship after attempts to deploy a life raft and anchor the craft failed Friday night. When Coast Guard reached the crew, Williams was found unresponsive in the water.
The crew initially declined assistance from the Coast Guard and other boaters and requested a tow boat after the sailboat's rudder failed. However, rough seas kept the tow boat from reaching them.
