Trammell S. Crow gives another $100,000 for legal defense of ...

Trammell S. Crow, the 61-year-old Dallas heir to a real estate empire, donated another $100,000 to the Farmers Branch Legal Defense Fund in support of the suburb?s efforts to bar illegal immigrants from rental housing. This comes just a few months after he cut the group a $100,000 check, bringing his total contribution to $200,000. The immigration-related legal bills in Farmers Branch now total $5.9 million.

Crow?s motivation?

In an emailed response this election day, Crow said, in part, ?My support for the city of Farmers Branch in its efforts to discourage illegal immigration is based on the same principles that guide my other donations for American minorities, for the environment and for responsible fiscal policies. The job competition and wage depression caused by the failure of Republican and Democratic presidents to reduce the illegal population is especially harmful to vulnerable minorities, including legal immigrants, whose unemployment and poverty rates are tragically high.?

Crow makes no comment on findings by several federal judges that the ordinance is unconstitutional. the city council in this suburb of 29,000 has persistently defended the ordinance, despite those federal rulings. In October, the city?s outside lawyers argued in the ordinance?s defense in a rehearing before the full court of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans. The rehearing was granted on the stipulation lawyers address the U.S. Supreme Court?s landmark ruling that let stand one of four parts of an Arizona law, known as S.B. 1070, on immigration.

The Farmers Branch court cases also aren?t focused on the much-debated points of job competition and wage depression.

More to come in tomorrow?s paper.
