Vet's diary finally makes it to sweetheart

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Before Cpl. Thomas "Cotton" Jones was killed by a Japanese sniper in the South Pacific in 1944, he wrote what he called his "last life request" to anyone who might find his diary: Please give it to Laura Mae Davis, the girl he loved.

Davis did get to read the diary ? but not until nearly 70 years later, when she saw it in a display case at the National World War II Museum.

"I didn't have any idea there was a diary in there," said the 90-year-old Mooresville, Ind., woman. She said it brought tears to her eyes.

Laura Mae Davis Burlingame ? she married an Army Air Corps man in 1945 ? had gone to the New Orleans museum on April 24 looking for a display commemorating the young Marine who had been her high-school sweetheart.

"I figured I'd see pictures of him and the fellows he'd served with and articles about where he served," she said.

She was stunned to find the diary of the 22-year-old machine gunner.

Curator Eric Rivet (rih-VET) let her take a closer look, using white gloves to protect the old papers from skin oils. It was the first time in his 17 years of museum work that someone found "themselves mentioned in an artifact in the museum," Rivet said.

The diary was a gift to Jones from Davis. They had met in the class of '41 at Winslow High School. "He was a basketball player and I was a cheerleader," she said.

Jones had given her his class ring but they weren't engaged, she said. They had dated through high school. They went to the prom together.

He made his first diary entry while a private at Camp Elliott in San Diego, a little less than a year before he was killed. He described it as "my life history of my days in the U.S. Marine Corps ... And most of all my love for Laura Mae for whom my heart is completely filled. So if you all get a chance please return it to her. I (am) writing this as my last life request."

A sniper's bullet between the eyes killed Jones on Sept. 17, 1944, the third day of the U.S. assault on the Pacific island of Peleliu (PEL-uh-loo), in Palau.

Peleliu was where U.S. forces learned the Japanese had changed their island defense tactics. Instead of concentrating units on the beaches and finishing with reckless banzai charges, the Japanese holed up in bunkers, trenches, pillboxes and caves ? many of them blasted into the island's hills and mountains ? that had to be taken one at a time.

Jones, nicknamed in high school for his blond hair, was in the 1st Marine Division's L Company, 3rd Battalion. He was among 1,794 Americans killed on Peleliu and nearby islands in a 2?-month assault that Marine Maj. Gen. William Rupertus had predicted would be over in a few days. Another 7,302 Americans were wounded. An estimated 10,900 Japanese were killed; 19 soldiers and sailors became prisoners of war. Another 283 POWs were laborers, mostly Korean.

Burlingame said she didn't know why she never got the diary. It apparently went first to a sister of Jones whom she didn't know well, she said.

Robert Hunt of Evansville, the nephew who gave Jones' artifacts to the museum in 2001, told her he had received it several years after Jones' death and worried that passing it on to Burlingame might cause problems with her marriage. It wouldn't have, she said: "My husband and Tommy were good friends."

When she learned Hunt was collecting mementoes for the museum, Burlingame said, she gave him photographs and the class ring.

Jones's last entry, written aboard the USS Maui on Dec. 1, 1943, described winning $200 at craps. He had a total of $320, he wrote, and if he were back home "Laura Mae & I would really have a wonderful Xmas." He wondered if he could wire the money to her as a Christmas present.

That didn't happen, Burlingame said. She said she was touched by the number of times he mentioned getting letters from his parents and her.

Burlingame's tour group had to leave but the museum scanned the diary and mailed a copy to her.

The diary's 4-by-7-inch back cover was nearly filled with her photograph. The picture itself was black and white, but the photographer had tinted her cheeks pink and her lips dark red.

She had signed it, "Love, Laurie."

World markets mixed after Japan market dip

AMSTERDAM (AP) ? With U.S. markets closed, world stocks ended Monday mostly higher ? with Japan the notable exception as the Nikkei sold off sharply for the second time in a week.

The decline came after Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Karoda said over the weekend Japanese interest rates could rise without causing instability, despite the country's large national debt.

The Nikkei 225 shed 3.2 percent to close at 14,142.65, with exporters hit hardest due to the rising yen. That's the reverse of the picture for most of this year, as yen losses have helped propel the index to a 36 percent gain since January.

Among major losers Monday, Nissan Motor Corp. dropped 6.8 percent. Yamaha Motor Co. tumbled 7.9 percent. Sony Corp. slid 6.3 percent.

The index also lost 7.3 percent on May 23, as investors have begun to wonder whether potential benefits of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's aggressive campaign to lift consumer prices and encourage borrowing and spending have already been priced in.

In European trading, Germany's DAX rose 0.9 percent to 8,381.30. France's CAC-40 advanced 0.9 percent to 3,994.25. Markets in Britain and the U.S. were closed for public holidays.

European Central Bank board member Joerg Asmussen said in a speech in Berlin that with the Eurozone countries in recession, the bank would continue to pursue easy monetary policy "as long as necessary."

Cees Smit, director at Amsterdam brokerage Today's Vermogensbeheer in Amsterdam, said most of the excitement in European stocks came in the morning.

"We were looking at Japan earlier and it was surprising how well European markets were reacting," he said.

He said trade had quieted by the afternoon and stocks drifted off their earlier highs as investors began contemplating U.S. May unemployment figures due out Tuesday.

Other global markets were mixed.

Hopes for a global economic recovery were undermined last week when a survey on China's monthly manufacturing pace showed a bigger-than-expected decline. Less-than-clear indications from the U.S. Federal Reserve on whether it might scale back its aggressive bond-buying program, dubbed quantitative easing or QE, also caused investors to curb their enthusiasm.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index reversed early losses Monday to rise 0.3 percent to 22,686.05 after pledges by China's leaders to pursue sustainable growth helped push up alternative energy stocks. China Everbright International jumped 5 percent. Anton Oilfield Services, which is pursuing shale gas development in China, surged 8.3 percent.

"We have seen a lot of funds buying into shale gas, wind power and environmental protection," said Jackson Wong, vice president at Tanrich Securities in Hong Kong. Wong also said that a recovery in mainland Chinese stocks helped the Hang Seng.

South Korea's Kospi gained 0.3 percent to 1,979.97. Benchmarks in mainland China and Taiwan rose. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 declined 0.5 percent to 4,959.90. Benchmarks in the Philippines, New Zealand and Indonesia fell.

Benchmark oil for July delivery was down 55 cents to $93.60 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 10 cents to $94.15 a barrel on the Nymex on Friday.

In currencies, the euro dropped slightly to $1.29324 from $1.2934 late Friday in New York. The dollar was at 101.09 yen, down from last week's high of more than 103 yen per dollar.

iRadio: Apple could do streaming really well, but they don't have to do it at all

The rumors of an Apple iRadio music streaming service just won't go away. With WWDC just around the corner, many think that we may see something announced in San Francisco?in the very same room Google recently announced All Access. Apple could knock it out of the park if they entered this space, and I'm sure a lot of us would love to see just such an Apple branded service. But a couple of questions still present themselves. Does Apple really need to do music streaming, and what form could it take if they do?

Does Apple need to do a music streaming service?

The tl;dr version is; no. Apple doesn't need to do anything. Should, or even would, they is a better question. Apple reinvented the way we listen to music, making digital tracks work for record labels and consumers alike. For many, the iPod and iTunes were their first foray into Apple products. That's exactly where I began 9 years ago. The iPod brought with it the iTunes Store, and in the present day digital downloads have almost completely replaced the sale of physical media. And still, to this day, the largest source of digital downloads is the iTunes Store.

The iTunes Store is well established and does good business for Apple. It's also easy to understand. You give them money, they give you music. It comes with a sense of ownership. Apple currently offers iTunes in the Cloud, which lets you re-download previously purchased music, and iTunes Match, which lets you upload your local music to an iCloud locker and then re-download (but not really stream it) from any of your devices. In both cases, it's music you've already bought or acquired, Apple's just helping you access it. A streaming service, one with a subscription, is something else entirely.

Competitors who offer streaming also have music stores, like Google for example, but none are anywhere close to as established as iTunes. Google was late to the music store party, and has since thrown a streaming service on top of this. But, it's limited to the U.S. only?officially.

The leading streaming services have been designed to be that from the ground up. iTunes was built to sell music. Apple runs iTunes at just above break even, which granted at that scale is a lot of money, but they're not risk-adverse to obsoleting it. Their goal is to sell hardware. Music just encourages people to buy more hardware. Would subscription be even better at that?

What could Apple do with a music streaming service?

Apple being Apple, I can't believe they would move into the market simply offering the same as the competition. They've achieved their success by offering simpler, easier, and quite often, better.

The rumors point to some sort of iRadio service, and I think that would be a better place to start. Spotify and Google have radio features slapped on top of search systems for tracks, artists and albums. You find something you like, and you start a radio station based on that. Apple could do it better.

Over the years, customers have bought a ton of music from the iTunes Store, all of which Apple has the records of. They already use it for Genius Recommendations and Mixes. So, in theory, they could offer up a similar recommendation service that captures what you like to listen to. Twitter #music is a good example, and Apple could sit perfectly in the middle between Twitter and Spotify. Use all the iTunes information they already have, send you a radio stream of music they think you'll like, with an instant link to the iTunes Store to purchase the track, see more by the artist and so on.

Integration is something key to consider too, since a lot of this music would be listened to on mobile devices. If it needs to be a separate app, then it isn't done right. Apple already has a music app on iOS devices, so for something that they want their customers to adopt, it would need to be integrated into what they already have. And that could work, I'd be quite happy to open up the Music app on my iPhone and have the choice to listen to something new alongside my existing collection.

At the moment I live in Spotify and Twitter #music, but that's two additional apps on top of the stock music player. If Apple could bring all that under one roof, similar to how Google is trying to play it with their mobile apps and All Access, it could be a hit.

What's on your stream?

So, there's a few of my thoughts on the subject. I rely heavily on streaming services for my music, but I rely on the recommendation and discovery aspects even more. It's a competitive market, but what say you guys; are you pulling for an Apple music streaming service? What form would you most like it to take, and would you switch from an existing service if Apple helped you keep all your music in one place?

Merkel not scaring off conservative voters, Schaeuble says

BERLIN (Reuters) - Chancellor Angela Merkel has not alienated conservative German voters by pushing her Christian Democrats into the center but has instead put the party on course to win for a third straight term in September, Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said.

In an interview with Der Spiegel magazine on Sunday, the powerful leader of the CDU's conservative wing made it clear to fellow right wingers they should stop sniping at Merkel if they want to help keep the party in power for four more years.

Schaeuble also ruled out for the first time a "grand coalition" with the center-left Social Democrats (SPD), a right-center alliance that many analysts expect to be the outcome in September. He also ruled out a coalition with the Greens.

Merkel, seeking a third term, has been under fire from the right wing of her CDU for pushing the party away from its conservative roots. Since 2009 the CDU has abandoned conscription, nuclear power and university fees. It is also now opening itself to quotas for women executives and gay rights.

"We're not scaring away anyone," Schaeuble told der Spiegel in a stirring defense of Merkel four months before the election. "On the contrary, the CDU is in a better position right now than ever before and I'm not just talking about opinion polls.

"Merkel's doing a remarkable job," he added, pointing to the political weakness and infighting plaguing conservative parties in France and Britain. "Everyone will tell you that society has changed a lot in the last 20 years. We've got to accept that."

Schaeuble, 70, rejected the suggestion that conservatives feel estranged by Merkel's centrist strategies [ID:nL6N0BQ6HF]

"I also consider myself to be a conservative and I don't know anyone in the CDU who feels estranged by Merkel," he said.

Merkel has high approval ratings although she is viewed skeptically by the right wing of her party. Her popularity has helped the CDU and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), open up a wide lead ahead of the September 22 election.

In a poll published in Bild am Sonntag, the CDU/CSU would win 40 percent, up 1 point in the past week, while the SPD would win 27 percent, also up 1 point. But the CDU/CSU's coalition partners, the Free Democrats, at 4 percent, would fail to win seats in parliament.

The SPD and its preferred center-left partners, the Greens (13 percent), would also fall short of a majority. Analysts expect the CDU/CSU and SPD to form another grand coalition, like the right-center alliance that ruled from 2005 to 2009.

But Schaeuble became the first senior CDU figure to rule a "grand coalition" in the interview published on Sunday - using the threat of an SDP-Greens coalition in power as part of his rallying call.

"We won't form a coalition with anyone - if the center-right doesn't win a majority, then the SPD and Greens will repeat what they did in North Rhine-Westphalia," he said, referring to an inconclusive election in the state in 2010 when the SPD formed a minority coalition with the Greens that got backing from the far left-wing Left party.

He said he was confident the center right would win re-election in September.

(AP) ? German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Sunday she would use her country's economic clout to prevent the European Union from imposing punitive tariffs on some Chinese products to avoid a trade war.

Germany will push for "very intense talks" between the EU and China to seek a negotiated solution as swiftly as possible, the leader of Europe's biggest economy told visiting Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

The EU Commission, the 27-nation bloc's executive arm, accuses China of pricing its solar panels and some mobile telecom devices too cheaply, thereby flooding the European market, distorting competition and hurting European manufacturers. Brussels has therefore proposed imposing an average 47 percent special duty on Chinese solar panels, and it is continuing to look into the telecommunication sector.

Li sharply criticized the EU's approach, saying through a translator that "it sends a wrong signal because we want to fight protectionism together."

"We strongly oppose this decision," he insisted, referring to the proposed solar panel tariffs. "We hope that the EU won't use protectionist trade measures for such small a cause," he said.

The EU, the world's largest economy, is China's second-biggest business partner after the U.S., with a trade volume of about 430 billion euros in 2012. The solar panel exports stand for about 7 percent of China's total exports to the EU.

The EU Commission is expected to make a decision on the anti-dumping investigation after consulting all interested parties by the end of the year.

"Germany will work for this to be resolved as quickly as possible because we don't believe (tariffs) would help us very much," said Merkel. "And that's why we should very intensely use the next six months, and Germany will do everything to ensure that the talks will really advance," she added.

Li thanked Merkel, adding that China also hopes that talks between Beijing and Brussels will be able to avoid a trade standoff and yield "an amicable solution."

Germany was the only stop in an EU member nation on Li's inaugural trip abroad, in a sign that China seeks Berlin's clout to influence the EU's at times cumbersome decision making progress. Li, who took office in March, at one point even said during the news conference with Merkel that he was aware that German cannot replace the EU Commission.

China is the world's largest producer of solar panels, exporting more than half of its output to Europe, totaling 21 billion euros in 2011.

The global solar panel market is suffering from overcapacity, which has led to stiff competition that has forced several European manufacturers out of business.

Still, Germany's powerful industrial lobby groups oppose the discussed EU anti-dumping measures against China because they fear an escalating trade war that would dent the countries' buoying business ties.

Li said the EU's decision wouldn't serve its interests and would harm China and others. "It will put the (solar) sector's development in Europe in danger, harm the interest of the European companies, the European consumers and the European industry," he said.

China rejects the EU's price-dumping allegations, but the problem is no novelty for Beijing. The U.S. last year imposed punitive tariffs on solar panel imports after finding that China's government was subsidizing companies that were flooding the U.S. market.

Following Li's arrival at Berlin's Chancellery, he and Merkel met with students from both countries before overseeing the signing of a series of economic cooperation agreements. They also held closed-door talks and were set to have a dinner at a government guest house outside the capital later Sunday.

As part of his trip, Li visited Switzerland on Friday. In Zurich, he signed China's first free-trade agreement with a major Western economy. It had been negotiated for several years. .

On Monday, he will meet other officials and business leaders in Berlin. He also is scheduled to meet Merkel's challenger in September's national elections, the Social Democrats' candidate Peer Steinbrueck.

Have you ever been the abuser in any of your relationships? If yes, how did you abuse your partner/s and why did you abuse them?

I am not going to admit to this. I don't consider it abuse.

Do you believe the person you abused deserved it? Why?

I didn't abuse them. It's just how relationships work. It's all about power and control.

Were your parents or care-givers ever abusive to you while you were growing up? If yes, why do you think they were abusive?

I don't think they saw it as abuse, nor did I until I looked some stuff up.

"Abuse" is an interpretation of mainstream society.

Have you ever been in a relationship where you were abused by your partner? If yes, how did he or she abuse you and why do you think they were abusive to you?

No, no one abuses me.

Some women (and men) seem to go from one abusive relationship to another. What do you think the reason for that is?

Because abusive people are often dominant and capable, or otherwise possess other desirable qualities, including those relating to abusiveness, and people are attracted to dominant and capable people, and people who possess desirable qualities.

A women may be attracted to an abusive man, for example, because his personality in general is desirable - dominant, tough, possibly charming, able to get what he (and thus she) wants, etc.

She will take abuse from a man like this, and understandably so. A woman knows that a man cannot simply turn off his dominant, aggressive, and thus attractive personality around her, and so she should expect some abuse. What makes him attractive also makes him abusive, so you take the bad with the good.

Same with men who are attracted to abusive women. They know they cannot have the good without the bad. Because the good and the bad are related. You take the whole package, or you get nothing.

Facebook Home And Windows Phone Are Making The Same Apps-Related Misstep

2299217208_69091bfe67The problem for Home is Facebook has underestimated how important apps -- and, crucially, the customisation apps afford -- are to the smartphone experience. When you step back and consider it, that?s a breathtakingly massive oversight. But Facebook is not the only one to evince such flawed thinking: Microsoft's WIndows Phone platform displays a similar self-centred narcissism.

Customers' data counters reset for holiday weekend

Good news for EE customers in the UK this weekend -- the operator has announced that by way of apology for network issues earlier this week, all customers will have their data counters reset to zero. That means however much of your monthly data allowance you'd used, it'll reset to zero this weekend, allowing you to use an extra portion of data before your monthly billing date.

We've confirmed that our own account's meter was reset to zero as of this morning, and it looks like the changes apply to data-only contracts as well as regular phone customers. In fact, the reset seems to apply to all EE customers, regardless of whether you were affected by the recent outage.

Garlic-Ginger BBQ Chicken - Grilled Barbecue Chicken Recipes ...

1. Mom?s Garlic-Ginger BBQ Chicken

My mother has been cooking her chicken with three simple ingredients for a lifetime: soy sauce, garlic, and ginger. This five-ingredient marinade is free of preservatives, sugars, and chemical?no BBQ sauce in a bottle can match that!

Serves: 4 to 6

Ingredients:
1/4 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce
2 tablespoons rice vinegar
1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon sesame oil, divided
1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger
2 garlic cloves, finely minced
2 pounds chicken thighs or breasts, trimmed
1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds (optional)

Directions:
1. Place soy sauce, vinegar, sesame oil, ginger, and garlic in a gallon-sized resealable plastic bag (or large bowl). Seal and vigorously shake or whisk to combine. Add chicken, seal the bag (or cover the bowl with plastic wrap), and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or up to overnight.
2. Heat a grill pan over high heat, or heat your charcoal or gas grill to high. Using a silicone brush or a wad of paper towels and tongs, grease grill with remaining 1 teaspoon sesame oil. Grill chicken until browned on both sides, about 4 minutes total, cooking in batches, if necessary. Transfer to a plate and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Hint: Some grills have ?hot spots? and flames that vary. Check your grill for regular maintenance and test the heat with one piece of protein prior to cooking all of your chicken.

No fatalities in I-5 bridge collapse in northwest Washington

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (AP) ? An Interstate 5 bridge over a river north of Seattle collapsed Thursday evening, dumping several vehicles into the water as authorities investigated the cause of the collapse that cut off the state's main north-south thruway and sent three people to the hospital.

Authorities said no one was killed and the extent of the injuries of the three people rescued from the water remained unclear, said Marcus Deyerin, a spokesman for the Northwest Washington Incident Management Team.

A search of the river continues and a dive team was on scene as well as several rescue boats still on the river.

"We don't think anyone else went into the water," said Marcus Deyerin, a spokesman for the Northwest Washington Incident Management Team. "At this point we're optimistic."

Washington State Trooper Mark Francis said a portion of the four-lane bridge over the Skagit River collapsed about 7 p.m. It was not known what caused the collapse of the bridge about 60 miles north of Seattle in Skagit County, but the state Transportation Department said it was investigating whether an oversize load may have struck the bridge.

A damaged red car and a damaged pickup truck were visible in the water, which appeared so shallow it barely reached the top of the car's hood.

Xavier Grospe, 62, who lives near the river, said he could see three cars with what appeared to be one person per vehicle. The vehicles were sitting still in the water, partially submerged and partly above the waterline, and the apparent drivers were sitting either on top of the vehicles or on the edge of open windows.

"It doesn't look like anybody's in danger right now," Grospe said.

Helicopter footage aired by KOMO-TV in Seattle showed several rescue boats at the bridge collapse scene with several ambulances waiting on the shore. One rescue boat left the scene with one person strapped into a stretcher.

A damaged red car and a damaged pickup truck were visible in the water, which appeared so shallow it barely reached the top of the car's hood.

Crowds of people lined the river to watch the scene unfold.

"It's not something you see every day," said Jimmy O'Connor, the owner of two local pizza restaurants who was driving on another bridge parallel to the one that collapsed. "People were starting to crawl out of their cars."

He said he and his girlfriend were about 400 yards away on the Burlington Bridge when they heard "just a loud bang."

"Then we looked over and saw the bridge was down in the water," he said.

He pulled over and saw three vehicles in the water, including a camping trailer that landed upside-down, he said.

Kari Ranten, a spokeswoman for Skagit Valley Hospital, said two people who were injured in the collapse were en route to the facility. She said another person was being transported to a different area hospital.

The bridge is not considered structurally deficient but is listed as being "functionally obsolete" - a category meaning that their design is outdated, such as having narrow shoulders are low clearance underneath, according to a database compiled by the Federal Highway Administration.

The bridge was built in 1955 and has a sufficiency rating of 57.4 out of 100, according to federal records. That is well below the statewide average rating of 80, according to an Associated Press analysis of federal data, but 759 bridges in the state have a lower sufficiency score.

According to a 2012 Skagit County Public Works Department, 42 of the county's 108 bridges that are 50 years or older. The document says eight of the bridges are more than 70 years old and two are over 80.

Washington state was given a C in the American Society of Civil Engineers' 2013 infrastructure report card and a C- when it came to the state's bridges. The group said more than a quarter of Washington's 7,840 bridges are considered structurally deficient of functionally obsolete.

Obama's drone speech welcomed in Pakistan, Yemen

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? President Barack Obama's speech on the use of drones to kill Islamic militants was well-received in two countries most affected by the strikes ? Pakistan and Yemen ? but criticism of the U.S. policy remains strong.

Obama cast the drone program as crucial to U.S. counterterrorism efforts, though he announced more restrictive rules governing the attacks. His advisers said these would effectively limit future use of drones.

Pakistani officials and analysts said Friday that Obama addressed some of Islamabad's concerns, which could help improve relations. But Pakistan still demands the strikes end entirely, saying they violate Pakistan's sovereignty.

A Yemeni intelligence official says drone strikes are effective against al-Qaida and have thwarted plans to kidnap diplomats and foreigners. The official spoke anonymously because he wasn't authorized to talk to media.

Grizzlies, Memphis ready to 'believe' vs Spurs

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) ? The towels are showing up all around Memphis. They hang over neighborhood signs and even at a door to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

The sentiment? Believe Memphis.

The Grizzlies certainly do.

Yes, they are down 0-2 to San Antonio in their first Western Conference final, but they take heart in knowing they dug themselves out of an 0-2 hole in the first round against the Clippers.

No NBA team has won separate series in the same postseason after losing the first two games. The Grizzlies now see only opportunity at home, where they have yet to lose this postseason.

"We got to believe," Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph said. "We got to be confident. We got to believe. Game 2 went down, we came all the way back and went to overtime, so we got to have that confidence and we got to believe in ourselves."

Game 3 is Saturday night.

"Believe Memphis" is the slogan first printed on giveaway towels for fans in the 2011 playoffs, which they held up instead of waving, trying to will the Grizzlies to victory late in a game against Oklahoma City. Yes, the Grizzlies won that game in overtime, and it's been a catch-phrase since then for this small market team in a town best known for its barbecue and music.

Fans are ready for the latest biggest home game in team history, and the Grizzlies hear all the excitement every time they go outside. So they are busy trying to focus on business.

"We're down 0-2 and we've got to take care of home just like they took care of home," Grizzlies guard Tony Allen said Friday. "Simple as that."

The Grizzlies' confidence also stems from a return to the arena they call the "Grindhouse." They set a franchise record winning 32 games there this season, and they are 19-1 here since Feb. 8. Memphis also has lost three straight only twice this season, the last in mid-January.

This series took a three-day break after the Spurs won 93-89 in overtime Tuesday night in Game 2. The Grizzlies took off Wednesday after flying home and practiced Thursday and Friday. The Spurs practiced Wednesday and Thursday before taking off Friday.

The home team has won 17 of the last 20 games between these teams, and the Spurs lost both trips to Memphis during the regular season. With strong memories of blowing a 2-0 lead to Oklahoma City in the Western finals, the Spurs know the games in Memphis will be hard.

"We know they play great at home," Spurs forward Boris Diaw said. "They have a great crowd, and they seem to be more pumped up when they play at home. They are probably going to make more shots, so we've got to be ready for that."

It would be tough for the Grizzlies to shoot much worse than they did in the first two games in San Antonio, including a stretch where they missed seven straight layups in one sequence. They missed 15 of 18 attempts inside 5 feet in the first half, a statistic that surprised Grizzlies guard Mike Conley because of their strength scoring in the paint.

"We don't expect to do that again, but we just have to be better mentally prepared and focused on finishing at the rim," Conley said.

Randolph went 1 of 8 in the first game and shot a bit better in Game 2. But he still struggled with close shots, with the Spurs often doubling down on him. Randolph said he needs guards like Conley, Allen and Jerryd Bayless to be more aggressive helping on the perimeter and moving the ball.

"That rim's tight," Randolph said with a laugh. "No, I'll just be confident. I'll take that shot again tomorrow, and hopefully it goes in."

Memphis coach Lionel Hollins has spent the past two days trying to tighten his defense. He's also worked on his team's spacing in an effort to revive the offense.

In any case, the coach doesn't want his Grizzlies to relax too much and expect a boost simply by being at home.

"As I told our team, being home is not going to win anything for us," Hollins said. "We have to go out and play much better. There's no need at this point to change the starting lineup. I mean we lost an overtime game, and we got blown out in a game. We have to come here, hold serve and we got to play better, obviously."

The Grizzlies also want to make Spurs point guard Tony Parker work harder and spend more energy bringing the ball up the court. That also might slow Parker from getting his teammates involved, something he did all too well in Game 2 with a playoff-best 18 assists.

Parker had an MRI exam on his bruised left calf Thursday. The three-day break provided a welcome break for him.

"I feel like I'll be fine Saturday," he said.

The Spurs, looking to win their first NBA title since 2007, have been getting strong contributions from Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green. Both have scored in double figures in each game this series.

Green has not lost sight of that blown 2-0 lead to Oklahoma City a year ago.

"We're a more mature team," he said. "We've been there before so we know what it takes. But we also know what it takes to get past that point and not to be lackadaisical, not to get satisfied. We've just got to continue to just come out and play basketball, stay focused and remember what happened last year."

Huawei Ascend P6 leaks in official imagery, may show on June 18th

Huawei's upcoming Ascend P6 must be as slim as we've heard, because it just keeps slipping out -- this time, in an official rendering obtained by @evleaks. The imagery appears to validate what we've previously seen in photos, including the wafer-like 6.2mm thick body, a metal chassis and an iteration of the Emotion UI layer that we just saw on the Ascend Mate. And in case there's any lingering doubts, we've even received a possible launch window from the company itself. In a quickly deleted Sina Weibo post referring to the previous leak, Huawei Device Chairman Richard Yu told his followers that this device is indeed part of the P series, and should be revealed at the company's June 18th event in London. At this rate, all that's left for the company is to walk on stage and make its skinniest Ascend official.

Home sales close in on three-and-a-half year high

By Lucia Mutikani

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Home resales rose in April to the highest level in nearly 3-1/2 years and prices surged, offering the economy a buffer from the stiff headwinds posed by belt-tightening by Washington.

The National Association of Realtors said on Wednesday existing home sales advanced 0.6 percent to an annual rate of 4.97 million units, the highest level since November 2009.

The data underscored the housing market's improving fortunes as it starts to regain its footing. Resales were 9.7 percent higher than in the same period last year.

"It's quite supportive of the overall economy," said Michelle Meyer, a senior economist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in New York. "It's a cushion against some of the other concerns in the economy."

Economic activity appears to have slowed somewhat early in the second quarter as the effects of higher taxes and deep government spending cuts have started filtering through.

Manufacturing, in particular, has been showing strains. But housing has held up surprisingly well, with the gains in home values helping to boost consumer confidence and retail sales.

The ripples from housing's recovery have also extended to the jobs market, with construction employment rising.

That should limit the degree to which the economy slows this quarter. It expanded at a 2.5 percent annual pace in the first three months of the year.

Tight supplies in some parts of the country have constrained the pace of home sales, but sellers are starting to wade back into the market, attracted by rising prices.

In April, the median home sales price increased 11 percent from a year ago to $192,800, the highest level since August 2008. It was the fifth consecutive month of double-digit gains.

With prices rising, more sellers put their properties on the market. The inventory of homes on the market rose 11.9 percent from March to 2.16 million.

SUPPLY STILL TIGHT

The increased inventory represented a 5.2 months' supply at April's sales pace, up from 4.7 months in March. It remained, however, below the 6.0-month level that is normally considered a good balance between supply and demand.

The market has been helped by monetary stimulus from the Federal Reserve that has kept mortgage rates near record lows. On Wednesday, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said a decision to scale back the $85 billion in bonds the Fed is buying each month could come at one of the central bank's "next few meetings" if the economy looked set to maintain momentum.

The housing report had little impact on U.S. financial markets, with traders focused on Bernanke's comments. The dollar rose to a near three-year peak against a basket of currencies, while prices for U.S. government bonds slumped.

Wall Street stocks fell, with the Standard & Poor's 500 index posting its biggest decline in three weeks.

Adding to signs that the housing recovery was becoming firmly established, distressed properties - which can weigh on prices because they typically sell at deep discounts - accounted for only 18 percent of sales last month.

That was the lowest since the Realtors group started monitoring them in October 2008. These properties, foreclosures and short sales, had made up 21 percent of sales in March.

In another bright sign, properties are selling more quickly. The median time on the market for homes was 46 days in April, down from 62 days the prior month. That was the fewest days since the NAR started monitoring that number in May 2011. Before the market collapsed in 2006, it usually took about 90 days to sell a home.

"While there are clearly a lot of interested buyers out there snapping up homes at a rapid clip, there do not seem to be enough homes on the market," said Omair Sharif, an economist at RBS in Stamford, Connecticut.

About 44 percent of all homes sold in April had been on the market for less than a month, while only 8 percent had been on the market for a year or longer.

Last month, first-time buyers accounted for 29 percent of the transactions, with investors buying 19 percent of homes. Investors, both individuals and institutions, are mostly buying homes for renting.

Sales were up in three of the four regions, falling 3.4 percent in the Midwest.

Blake Shelton putting together Okla. benefit show

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Blake Shelton and NBC are putting together a benefit for Oklahoma tornado victims.

Shelton told reporters about the fundraising effort after Tuesday night's episode of "The Voice." Shelton, an Oklahoma native, paid tribute to the thousands affected by Sunday and Monday's tornadoes by performing an acoustic version of the hit "Over You" with wife Miranda Lambert.

He said the benefit would be held soon in nearby Oklahoma City.

At least 24 people, including nine schoolchildren, were killed Monday afternoon in Moore, Okla., when an F-5 tornado with 200 mph winds touched down for 40 minutes and destroyed entire neighborhoods.

Toby Keith, a native of Moore, also is planning a benefit. His sister's house was hit by the tornado.

More details about both fundraising efforts will be released later.

Reports Find Variation in Prostate, Breast Cancer Treatments Across ...

Treatments for prostate and breast cancer vary in California depending on where patients live, according to two reports released by the California HealthCare Foundation, the Contra Costa Times reports.

CHCF publishes California Healthline.

Findings on Prostate Cancer Treatment

The report on prostate cancer treatment found that physicians in Tracy use internal radiation to treat men for prostate cancer at more than four times the state average, the highest rate in California.

Meanwhile, men living 60 miles away?near Stanford University?undergo the same procedure about half as often as the state average, according to the report.

Findings on Breast Cancer Treatment

The report on breast cancer treatment found that women in Livermore undergo a lumpectomy without radiation to treat early stage breast cancer at 192% of the state average.

In San Mateo, women undergo the treatment at 64% of the state average, according to the report.

Comments on Findings

Researchers said that the variations in care indicate that physicians often determine which treatments will be used, rather than patients or medical science.

Matthew Cooperberg -- a member of the advisory committee for the study and an assistant professor in the departments of urology and epidemiology and biostatistics at UC-San Francisco -- said, "There are very different financial incentives for one treatment over another."?

Maribeth Shannon -- director of CHCF's market and policy monitor program -- said, "Physicians, for whatever reason, get comfortable with a particular treatment," adding, "There's not as much true shared decision-making as there should be."

She said that if patients played a bigger role in deciding their treatments, there would be less variation in prostate and breast cancer care across the state (Kleffman, Contra Costa Times, 5/21).
