WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Investigators in Columbus County have charged a man after they say he beat his dog in the head with a hammer.

Investigators say the incident happened earlier this month. The Columbus County Sheriff's Office charged Ronnie Tyler with felony animal cruelty. While Tyler posted bail and waits for his next court date, his dog is recovering at a home in Wilmington.

Investigators say Tyler, 53, beat his American Stafford Terrier with a hammer, May 5. Neighbors say they saw Tyler take the year-old pup into the woods and come back without her. A day later neighbors saw the dog walking out of the woods, and the called animal control.

The Columbus Humane Society later placed the dog in a Wilmington foster home, where she is recovering. Caregivers say the dog is sweet natured. They say after treating her wounds with anti-bacterial spray, her head turned purple which earned her the nickname Violet.

The Columbus Humane Society says Tyler has another dog, which it the society is trying to get custody of. They believe that dog is a Rottweiler.

A phone number for Tyler could not immediately be found.
